My research has focused on investigating the neuroprotective effects of omega-3 fatty acids in ageing and after neurotrauma. The studies on ageing have looked at a variety of key indices including inflammation, oxidative stress, the glutamatergic system, retinoid signalling and hippocampal neurogenesis. These studies have helped elucidate some specific mechanisms of action which may be involved in the beneficial effects seen in normal ageing and in a variety of psychiatric and neurological disorders, and in particular neurodegenerative conditions. The work on neurotrauma has focused on spinal cord injury, although we have also investigated peripheral nerve injury. In the area of spinal cord injury we have shown significant therapeutic effects. My current research is focused on the therapeutic application of omega-3 fatty acids, where projects include an investigating into the effects of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on static and dynamic balance in children.
